I broke down and bought Spirit of the Century, and downloaded the free PDF while I wait for the hardcopy to ship. Though I wasn't real enthusiastic about pulp adventures, I got it to check out FATE v3.

I AM IMPRESSED! I'm so impressed, that now I'm planning on actually running a pulp adventure campaign in the same spirit as Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, mixed with the Shadow.

FATE v3, as written for SotC, is an extremely elegant Fudge derivative. I've been using Aspects vs. Attributes for some time now, and I like the new ways in which Aspect are handled in FATE v3.

An interesting new thing is the way that minor NPC's, or 'minions' are used in the mechanics. Minions have a quality rating for the basic competence level and are then divided into groups of any size that the GM deems appropriate. As the PC's whittle down each group of minions, the group becomes less and less effective, until it is rendered completely ineffective. In addition, they can add a cool survivability factor to any major NPC who attaches him/herself to one of these groups.

Companions are also handled with the same system, with the advantage of being able to gain skills and act more independently than the minions.

Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend it to others.

Good gaming!

Very Cool! Smile
I'd throw in some "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"...

I haven't actually gotten my hands on Spirit of the Century, but just reading through the table of contents, some reviews, and excerpts...

This looks like an RPG truly done right. You can pick it up, and using the information in the book, really sit down and have some great fun and some great roleplaying.

That's a true rarity! Evilhat--you guys can give yourselves a real clap on the back.

It looks just beautiful. An RPG done right.

Having a fantastic time with SotC. I've run two game "straight" (using the sample characters) with Adamant's "The Lost Temple of the Incan Blood Gods" adventure (at DarkCon and the EndGame mincon).

Just a wonderfully fun game both times.

I also kicked off a Star Wars (space fantasy pulp. Am I wrong? Wink ) this past week, using SotC as the rules engine. Jedi kung fu ensued.

Incidentally, I do a review of SotC in Episode 10 of 2d6 Feet in a Random Direction, and we discuss the EG minicon game results in Episode 11.

I gotta get out there and get this game. Is it available yet in distribution or just direct?

It's in distribution through Indie Press Revolution, which means it's available direct to consumers, or through local game stores (who place orders with IPR).

Aspects, tagging, guessing, compelling, deceiving, things not costing a fate point. All very confusing, perhaps i'll leave it out

EDIT: 1st post, did not want to be negative, so I'll say, this game looks really fun, just got to get familiar with new rules/ideas

From what I have seen the game looks really good, and my younger brother is really exited about it. (They have around two pages of rules on fire and explosions, bring that up once and I can now play it whenever) The only problem is getting used to the new trait ladder, but I think I have it down.

There's just something about their version of the Fudge scale that I'm not satisfied with...

+8 Legendary
+7 Epic
+6 Fantastic
+5 Superb
+4 Great
+3 Good
+2 Fair
+1 Average
0 Mediocre
-1 Poor
-2 Terrible
